Advancing shared resilience: Reimagining the AU–EU health partnership

On 15 October 2026 from 10.30-14.00 CEST, ECDPM is organising a virtual expert workshop on how the AU-EU partnership can become a more strategic alliance that strengthens Africa’s health sovereignty, builds shared resilience, and contributes to a more resilient global health system.

This is a closed-door, invitation-only meeting.

Background

The workshop will examine how the AU–EU health partnership can respond more effectively to a rapidly changing global health context, marked by persistent health inequalities, pressures on health financing, shifting global health governance and geopolitical dynamics, and growing emphasis on health security, resilience and sovereignty. While the AU and EU share an interest in strengthening health systems and advancing a more resilient global health architecture, there remain differences in how these ambitions are translated into priorities, financing and modes of cooperation.

Against this backdrop, the workshop aims to identify areas of political traction and mutual interest where the AU and EU can work more strategically together, while strengthening Africa’s leadership and influence in global health. It will explore how the partnership can advance inclusive health security and ensure that resilience-oriented investments contribute to African health sovereignty and are aligned with priorities identified by African countries and institutions.
