Mapping AI governance in Africa
AI has significant potential to drive economic and social development across Africa with smart, inclusive policies. ECDPM's work in this area aims to provide a realistic understanding of the evolving AI landscape on the continent: identifying key actors, ongoing activities, and strategic opportunities for development and international partners.
As part of a new video series featuring ten ECDPM experts on our 2024 highlights, Melody Musoni discusses the work of our digital team on mapping AI governance in Africa.
A central component of our efforts in 2024 has been the development of an interactive tool dedicated to mapping data policies in Africa. This resource offers a comprehensive overview of the crucial digital policies and legal frameworks currently in place across the continent and within individual member states, particularly those concerning data and the protection of personal information.
This toolkit serves as a valuable resource for stakeholders seeking a better understanding of the digital policy environment in Africa and aims to support informed engagement and cooperation in the development of AI.
Our upcoming project, "AI for social good," will delve into the diverse applications of AI across three priority sectors within Africa - health, education and agriculture. Through this work, we aim to identify both the opportunities and the existing challenges and barriers to the responsible and inclusive development of AI.
Looking ahead, we anticipate further developing our toolkit to encompass broader aspects beyond data sharing, exploring its potential as a standalone resource for understanding and navigating the African AI ecosystem. We remain committed to facilitating crucial conversations and providing valuable insights to support the strategic and impactful application of AI for social good in Africa, and welcome continued dialogue and collaboration to further these important objectives.
