The political economy of regional integration in Africa: What drives and constrains regional organisations? Synthesis report

Together with Palladium and the Swedish Embassy in Nairobi, ECDPM undertook a big research project from July 2014 until February 2016. This PERIA (political economy of regional integration in Africa) project aimed to answer the following questions: what drives and constrains regional integration in Africa? And what role do regional organisations play in this?
The synthesis report summarises the findings of six case studies on the African Union (AU), COMESA, EAC, ECOWAS, IGAD and SADC. The case studies focus on several sectors and policy areas – including peace and security, transport and infrastructure, food security, climate change, gender, trade, energy, conservation and industrialisation.
