Background
The Mediterranean region presents unique opportunities for a high-renewables economic development trajectory, with North African countries in particular benefiting from some of the lowest projected clean energy costs, highly complementary wind and solar conditions, and strategic access to both African and European markets, positioning the region as a gateway and driving force for the continent’s green industrialization.
TeraMed, a cross-regional, multistakeholder initiative endorsed by IRENA, the Global Renewable Alliance, and the Union for the Mediterranean, aims to transform the Mediterranean from a climate hotspot into a clean energy and industrial hub by tripling renewables and achieving 1TW of installed renewable capacity by 2030, an ambitious goal that requires new clean energy partnerships within Africa and across the Mediterranean with Europe.
