Foreign aid and its unintended consequences
On 17 October 2023, Dirk-Jan Koch, Chief Science Officer of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Special Professor of International Trade & Development Cooperation at Radboud University, will present his book ‘Foreign Aid and Its Unintended Consequences’.
Foreign aid and international development frequently result in a range of unintended consequences, both negative and positive. This book delves into these consequences, providing policymakers, practitioners, and evaluators with a fresh and comprehensive guide to understanding and addressing them.
In this discussion, the author will share some key insights into the ten more common kinds of unintended consequences, but also some of the book’s case studies, We will then open up a discussion with the audience on the book’s recommendations.
The presentation will be followed by a discussion and a light lunch at the ECDPM Brussels office.
Spaces are limited and on a first come first served basis.
ECDPM’s Mariella Di Commo, Associate director of Europe and Africa in the world,
will facilitate the discussion and Bruce Byiers, Head of African economic integration will be a discussant.
