Beyond the 'Brussels Effect': Global perspectives on AI governance
ECDPM and interface will host a side-event at the India AI Impact Summit 2026 on February 18 at 10:00am IST in Bharat Mandapam.

At the India AI Impact Summit 2026, policymakers gather from across the world to discuss digital governance, innovative capacity, and the shifting landscape of AI regulation.
Co-organised by ECDPM and interface, this session serves as a critical dialogue between the chief architect of the EU AI Act, Italian MEP Brando Benefei, with policymakers and global experts adopting their own regulatory forms and approaches. It will move beyond fragmented governance to explore how diverse global approaches to governance can align with the European approach and support greater international cooperation in the age of AI.
To build on our publication 'Beyond the Brussels effect', this session leverages the Summit’s positioning in India to build bridges between alternative global governance approaches. For example, for India’s focus on digital public goods. It is a unique opportunity to interrogate how the AI Act is shaping governance outside of Europe, and how some countries in the Global South are developing their own approaches to fit their priorities, beyond the EU’s “risk-based” framework.
