A manifesto for African regionalism - and how to support it

On 12 April 2023 from 11:00 to 13:00 CEST, ECDPM, together with United Nations University Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies and the Trade Law Centre are co-organising an online webinar to discuss how external actors can best support African economic integration.

Given the surge in initiatives around African economic integration - where the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the EU Global Gateway stand out as seeking to build upon existing African regional initiatives - the webinar will aim to explore how to make a success of these.

Two recent publications will help frame the discussions:
A ‘manifesto for regionalism in Africa’, put forward by Prof. Fredrik Soderbaum, renowned academic on African regionalism building on a recent publication on regional organisations and Agenda 2063.

An ECDPM paper on ‘Thinking and working politically on African economic integration’, seeks to pull together key messages from latest efforts at supporting regional economic integration in Africa.

Panel:

Kathleen van Hove, Senior policy officer, ECDPM (moderator)

Fredrik Soderbaum,  Professor, School of Global Studies (SGS), University of Gothenburg

Bruce Byiers, Senior Executive, African Economic Integration, ECDPM

Jean-Bertrand Azapno, Principal Adviser to the African Union Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry and Minerals, AU Commission

Fabio Di Stefano, Team Leader Economic Integration and Trade, EC INTPA

Trudi Hartzenberg, Executive Director,  TRALAC
