The stakes for the European Union and the International Community to reach a global climate agreement at the upcoming Conference of the Parties (COP21) could not be higher. Indeed, the overall objective is not only to achieve an effective and fair response to global climate change, but also to ensure that the implementation of the European Climate and Energy Strategy fits into this new global climate agreement. Therefore, the 1st Session will address the challenges for Europe in the run up to COP21 and present the opportunity to analyse the different EU’s bargaining chips for obtaining a well-balanced global climate agreement. The 2nd Session will then analyse what are the stakes for Europe in the aftermath of COP21, especially as the EU has a lot to win if the world decides to act seriously on climate change.
