This joint ECDPM and ACET session will illustrate the opportunities, incentives and challenges of trade in an African integration context, from a practical perspective. The speakers will not only address the merits of trade integration for inclusive development, but also the concrete challenges of implementation in three specific cases; Telecom in EAC, Mode IV in WA, and the CFTA. They will bring a political economy understanding of winners and losers related to specific interests that shape trade integration progress in Africa.

  1. Telecom services in East Africa – the One Network Area. Leonard Mungarulire, Co-founding partner at Ntare Insights Ltd.
  2. Mode IV of GATS – the case of talent mobility in West Africa, focusing on border management. Dr Ed Brown, Director of Country Engagements and Operations, ACET
  3. The dynamics in the Continental Free Trade Area (CFTA) of the African Union. Dr Sanoussi Bilal, Head of Trade, Investment and Finance Programme, ECDPM

Moderator: Kathleen Van Hove, Senior Policy Officer, ECDPM.

This event will take place in the framework of the WTO Public Forum 2017 — “Trade: Behind the Headlines” (room B).
