Recognising that regional trade and integration can be a powerful leverage of Africa’s transformation, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has recently awarded a grant to AERC to conduct research on “Rethinking Trade and Regional Integration in Africa”, as part of the broader AfDB-AERC project on “Research Capacity and Knowledge Enhancement for Africa’s Transformation.” This AfDB-AERC research project builds on the earlier studies (e.g., studies done at AfDB, UNECA and AERC) intended to inform African policy makers on what needs to be done to take regional integration to the next level.

ECDPM’s Bruce Byiers and Karim Karaki will present the research proposal on “The Political Economy of African Regional Integration & the CFTA”, which builds upon some of the work undertaken as part of the PEDRO research.
