By 2050 the global population is expected to reach 9 billion – and this is just one of the challenges that agriculture will have to face. Climate change and soil erosion are further important issues to be aware of.
More than half of the African population is working in agriculture, nevertheless the continent still imports more than 30 million tons of rice, wheat and cereals per year – and this trend is even intensifying. Large investments in the mechanization of the sector are therefore mandatory and the World Bank estimates that the sector will grow from 300 million US-Dollars in 2010 to more than one billion US-Dollars in 2030.
German companies have the technology and knowhow necessary for this modernization – as well as the important awareness of sustainability. But merely few of them are already active in Africa.
