The future of democracy in Africa

2017 will be a dynamic year for relations between Africa and Europe, with an EU-Africa Summit coming up in November and the launch of a new partnership based on the example of the Marshall Plan. Next to issues like migration and terrorism, leaders in Africa and Europe will again strive to find ways ahead for Africa, which remains a development laggard globally.

Africa has made remarkable progress in terms of democratic development since the end of the Cold War. However, the process of democratization has sometimes been turbulent. Too often the integrity of elections has been questioned, which often resulted in violent conflict.
