The European Development Days (EDD) is Europe’s leading forum on development and international cooperation. Organised by the European Commission, the forum brings together each year the development community to share ideas and experiences that can inspire new partnerships and innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges.

This year’s edition will focus on addressing inequalities and building a world which leaves no one behind. It will highlight the European Union’s commitment to addressing inequalities in line with the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.ECDPM will be taking part in this two-day event in various ways. Here is how.

Right to food, right to cities – Brainstorming Lab

June 18, 15:15-16:30, Brainstorming lab B2

Feeding rapidly-growing cities sustainably will be one of the key challenges of the next decades, in developing as well as developed countries. Key issues include long and distant supply chains, poor infrastructure, waste, the neglect of local production possibilities, and, of course, urban over- and under-nutrition.

The European Think Tanks Group (ETTG) and ECDPM organise this brainstorming lab to share the growing evidence of innovative urban policies and projects that create food access for marginalised groups, from cities in Europe and the Global South. Participants will brainstorm on a toolbox to integrate local food systems within urban planning with a special focus on increasing access to food for marginalised and vulnerable groups. The resulting urban food toolbox will be proposed to the European Commission to inform development programmes and approaches.

Access to sustainable energy to reduce inequalities: new partnership models

June 18, 18:45-20:00, Lab debate D3

Partnerships are a key driver to attain the SDGs. Yet, they are no silver bullet to fill investment gaps. Mutual interests and synergies are to be carefully identified for business and governments to join forces. Furthermore, new operating and financing models are to be developed to deliver concrete results on the ground.

The panel will explore new partnership models to provide access to sustainable energy at scale in developing countries, with a focus on Africa.

Within this topic, it will discuss: How to optimise processes for corporates and development organizations to work effectively together? How to move away from a piecemeal aid-based approach to full-scale public-private cooperation in the energy sector? How to involve local players in a structural way, embedding transferrable skills in projects?

ECDPM’s San Bilal will speak at this event. For more information, please visit the EDD website.

Changemakers’ breakfast

19 June,8:15-9:30, main Tour & Taxis Conference Centre (exact location TBA)
