Sibongile Mkhabela, CEO of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, will respond to the question and provoke a discussion on the dilemmas posed and faced by international aid and development funding.

Is Development Fit for Purpose?”, in keeping with Policy Par La’s remit, will question the purpose of international development and aid, its role and whether it is actually fit for purpose. This is timely not least because 2015 is the International Year of Development at the European Commission, but also given the global conversation taking place on development goals per se. By asking this bold question, we hope to stimulate a conversation about the dilemma of international aid/funding in terms of its history, trajectory of development, and where it sits currently in its relationship to local communities, their resilience and sustainability, both in terms of local infrastructure as well as livelihoods.
