Lessons learned from the Malian crisis and implications for international strategies in the region
On the 15th of May, a peace agreement is scheduled to be signed between a number of Malian armed groups and Bamako’s governmental authorities. After 8 months of negotiations in Algeria, and 3 years since the beginning of the 2012 crisis, this agreement is envisioned to represent a first step towards national stabilization. With assistance from its international partners, the Malian government will then have to start the difficult path of fostering trust between communities, implementing economic development programs in the deserted areas, enabling better representation for the northern population and achieving long-term security.
