Ambassador Series: African Union with Ambassador Bramdeo.

The African Union currently includes 54 member countries that vary widely in terms of population, economic development and political stability. The AU has played an important role in facilitating economic and political integration additionally to unity and solidarity within the region in the past ten years. The creation and expansion of numerous regional trade arrangements throughout the continent have followed a global trend, which has resulted in deeper regional integration. But are the slated goals of a pan-African trade treaty by 2017 anywhere near realisation?

The post-2015 development agenda is another point of focus for the African Union, in its partnership with the EU, where the role of trade liberalisation for poverty eradication and sustainable development has been highlighted. How will the two continents work together towards these aims? And how will the recent EU-Africa summit with a focus immigration issues play out in development narratives?
Join us at the next monthly Ambassador Series for an interesting debate with H.E. Ambassador Ajay Bramdeo who will be sharing his thoughts about an often neglected but strategic region with YPFP members. Additionally, we will discuss African peace and security issues and how all this impacts its political and economic ties with the EU and other countries in the region.

H.E Bramdeo has been the Ambassador of the African Union to the EU and the ACP Group since early 2012. A South African national, he was formerly the Chief Director of Africa Multilateral, and was the Contact Point for Southern African Development Community (SADC) at the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs, taking overall development responsibility for SADC, AU, the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) and Peace Missions. He also served as South African High Commissioner to Mauritius and the Seychelles.

Ambassador Bramdeo will also give advice to young professionals pursuing a foreign policy career based on his vast expertise in this field.
